Interview with Karla

former apprentice Biology Laboratory Technician

When did you complete your apprenticeship?

I started in August 2019 and completed my apprenticeship in June 2022.

In summary: what can you expect from an apprenticeship at Evotec?

Insight into many different departments and versatile work. Very good preparation for theoretical and practical exams and beyond.

In which team / department are you currently working?

After the apprenticeship I started working in a group called “Neuroinflammation” within the “Translational Neurosciences” department which focusses on rare diseases of the CNS (central nervous system) like Alzheimer’s disease etc.

Were you able to choose in which area you would like to work after completing the apprenticeship?

Yes, for me there were in total 6 different groups that offered me a position after the apprenticeship from which I could choose. But if I had been interested in another group there also would have been the possibility to ask for a position elsewhere.

Can you please describe which advantages you may have in your job due to being a former apprentice?

During the 3 or 3,5 years as an apprentice you will not only learn the theory and practice of your job, but you will also get to know the company itself and how it runs (e.g. which softwares are used and how documentation works). This will make it easier for you to navigate within the company as a newstarter after the apprenticeship, since you already know mostly how things are done.

Another huge advantage is that you will get to know many people from different departments. Since there’s almost always a close cooperation between different groups it will make it easier for you if you already know who’s working where and who to turn to for specific questions.

What are the main reasons for you to work at Evotec?

During the apprenticeship I felt very welcomed by all colleagues and had very good support from my instructor/trainer.

I found a team with people that I’m happy to work with and feel very comfortable around.

Also I was able to find a work group with a very versatile set of ever changing techniques that are used in the lab, which makes my working life always interesting and challenges me to keep learning something new every day.
