Lab Technician - Sample Management - (Site Based, Abingdon, UK)

A Lab Technician is a laboratory-based position; responsible for managing and aiding the distribution of compounds, whilst collaborating with internal project areas.

Notes: Days only, no weekends. 8 hours per day, flexible start time between 7:00am till 9:00am.

Key Responsibilities or Core Accountabilities:

•    Operate Sample Management (SM) information systems: sample registrations, sample requesting, order processing, despatching and provisioning of sample information for all requests.
•    Work collaboratively in the SM team to deliver quality and timely weighing, solubilisation and assay ready plates, in accordance with service level agreements.
•    Accurately weigh requested samples according to priority and handling codes, ensuring balances are calibrated, minimum stock is dispensed, and the necessary packaging and documentation are provided for recipients. 
•    Operate liquid handling automation to create high quality liquid samples, ensuring quality assurance (QA) protocols are carried out at specified intervals and any deviations are rectified or escalated for immediate investigation
•    Operate manual solid and liquid stores for sample storage and retrieval.
•    Complete on-site sample collection and delivery, and prepare the necessary. documentation for external sample despatches; working collaboratively with the Sample Logistics coordinator to ensure shipments meet all service level agreements.
•    Operate manual SM processes to ensure business continuity for critical project deliveries during periods of major automation downtime.

•    Communicate progress to team and supervisors, and ensure close co-operation with scientific staff.
•    Operate all procedures in accordance with SM SOPs, following company safety policies and COSHH regulations, consulting supervisors as necessary.


Knowledge, Skills & Capabilities:
•    Experience in the use of balances, fume hoods, and basic chemical handling procedures.
•    Experience in the use of automated liquid handling equipment.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•    Excellent Microsoft Excel and Word skills.
•    Ability to use own initiative and work independently.
•    Excellent attention to detail; recording information accurately.
•    Good level of numeracy.
•    Flexible; able to work under pressure, and deal with changing demands.

Education, Qualifications and Experience:

•    Minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above to include English and Mathematics.
•    Basic laboratory experience desired but not essential.
•    Willingness to learn new skills and quickly absorb information.
•    A professional and mature approach to work.

Employees must adhere to all applicable company policies and procedures.  Regular and predictable attendance is required. Willingness and ability to work non-standard business hours, such as evenings, weekends and holidays, on an as-needed basis is required. Employees must be able to use good judgement, and effectively deal with difficult situations, multiple demands and changing priorities.
