Apprentice in Micellar Chemistry
Context & apprenticeship subject: At Evotec – a world leading R&D partnering organization – we are committed to reduce the environmental impact of our activities, by adopting the green chemistry principles (1). We design chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. Green chemistry applies across the life cycle of a chemical product (from design to disposal). Guided by this principle, we recently developed a new working group specialized in micellar chemistry. The goal is to replace commonly used CMR solvents (DCM, DMF, dioxane, toluene etc…) by water. However, the use of water as the only solvent can be complicated, mainly due to the solubility of organic reagents. This is the reason why, in the early 2000’s, some research groups have developed surfactants for organic chemistry (2), enabling reactions to be carried out in water inside these micelles, the so called micellar chemistry.
The aim of this apprenticeship is to further develop micellar chemistry at Evotec. To achieve this, the student would have 3 surfactants at his/her disposal: TPGS-750-M, HPMC and SPGS-550-M also known as Nok (3). Those surfactants will be widely used for different types of reactions such as pallado-catalyzed cross couplings, reductions, amide couplings etc…

Candidate profile: The candidate must be enrolled in a professional bachelor's, master's, or engineering program that includes a work-study (apprenticeship) component., and possess solid skills in organic chemistry. The candidate is expected to demonstrate a keen interest in green chemistry and in developing more sustainable solutions. He/she should be familiar with classical characterization techniques (LCMS, TLC, NMR...), have a strong interest in research, innovation and demonstrate autonomy and initiatives.
